Our Lighting Designer’s Tip - Using Wall Lights to Layer Your Lighting

Many spaces start off working with a single light source — modern downlights in a new build, perhaps, or a pendant or two. It’s easy to think that’s enough. It isn’t.

To create space that feels alive, styled and welcoming, you need to layer your lighting. Wall lights are an essential part of this.

The additional lighting layers aren’t about brightness. They’re about breaking your light free from overhead — because light that only comes from above is flat, clinical, and uninviting.

What you’re building with the addition of wall lights is warmth: multiple low-wattage sources, each contributing something soft. Get this right and you’ll feel it the moment you walk through the door. So will your guests.

For living spaces and hallways, start by positioning wall lights either side of a mirror, or either side of a piece of artwork with a mirror on the opposite wall to bounce light back through the space. Mount them at 150–170cm from finished floor level to the centre of the fitting, and consider choosing a mirror with a metallic frame that ties back to your fittings.

If you are hanging a wall light over a bedside table then, as a general rule, the light source should sit roughly the right height for reading when you're sitting up in bed. Aim for the bottom of the fitting to sit around 70cm above the top of your bedside table, depending on the height of the table. Any higher than that may leave you reading in shadow. Any lower and the light will shine straight into your eyes.
