Our Lighting Designer’s Tip - Semi-Flush Ceiling Lights for Bathrooms and Small Living Spaces

The first thing to understand is that flush and semi-flush fittings aren't a compromise — they're a considered design choice. In a room with a ceiling height of 2.4m or below, a fitting that sits close to the ceiling will always look more intentional and more elegant than a pendant that hangs too low and crowds the space.

Your ceiling clearance should be around 2.1m from floor to the lowest point of the fitting — that's your minimum. Work within that and you have more choice than most people realise.

The second thing: don't rely on your ceiling light alone. A flush fitting in a small room works best as part of a layered scheme — a table lamp in the corner, a floor lamp beside the sofa. In a bathroom, a flush fitting works wonderfully with wall lights, to add depth. Layering in this way will make your space feel luxurious, generous and alive.
