Pendant ceiling lights are one of the most versatile tools in a light designer's kit - and yet they are so often underused in smaller spaces. The instinct within a compact room or bathroom is to reach for a flush fitting and go no further - resist that instinct and consider adding in a pendant.

A single pendant, hung at the right height, draws the eye and adds a sense of style and layering within a room, ideal for elevating the atmosphere of a space from average to luxurious.

The key is proportion and drop. In a small living room, aim to hang your pendant so that the base of the fitting sits around 200 - 210cm from the floor. This is high enough to avoid any sense of encroachment but low enough to draw the eye and feel warm and intimate.

In a bathroom, ceiling height and zone compliance matter more than anything - always ensure that your chosen pendant carries the appropriate IP rating for the zone in which it will be installed.
