Lighting Designer’s Tips - Why Choose a Ceiling Fan Light?
As our world warms and summers are hotter than ever, we are all looking for ways to keep comfortable and cool in our homes. What if the answer to keeping cool was also one of the most stylish decisions you could make for your interior? Here at Lightbox, we really think it could be!
Air conditioning systems require significant investments of both time and money - pipe work, specialist engineers and sometimes structural alterations are required and, of course, it can be expensive. A ceiling fan, by contrasted, is fitted by any competent electrician in the same way as any other light fitting. The time and money involved is a fraction of what you’d spend on air conditioning. Plus, in practical terms, your fan could be up and running the same day that it arrives with you - very different from air conditioning!
Another point to consider is environmental impact. Ceiling fans use a fraction of the electricity that air conditioning systems consume. Choosing a ceiling fan is an eco-friendly call - you stay cool, your energy bills stay lower and your carbon footprint stays small. In an era when we’re all thinking carefully about how we use energy at home, this matters.
When it comes to aesthetics, the ceiling fan light wins hands down. Air conditioning units are not known for being beautiful. A wall-mounted box or ceiling cassette will always draw the eye for the wrong reasons, interrupting the visual flow of your interior and adding nothing in the way of style. A ceiling fan light, however, can really elevate your interior. Choose the right design and it will complement and add to your decor - a design statement that works every day of the year, not just in summer.
As a general guide you’ll need a minimum ceiling height of around 2.3m to install your ceiling fan safely - this ensures the blades remain well clear of head height. For standard ceiling heights of 2.4m - 2.7m, a flush mounted or close-to-ceiling fan (sometimes called a hugger fan) is ideal, as it sits close to the ceiling, without a drop rod.
For higher ceilings of 2.7m and above, a fan with a drop rod will give better airflow circulation.
Size matters too. The general rule is: the larger the room, the larger the fan span you’ll need. A smaller room, such as a bedroom, study or compact sitting room, will suit a fan in the 60 - 80cm range. A larger living space, open-plan kitchen or conservatory will benefit from a fan of 90cm or more - the Zen is a perfect choice.
