The bathroom is often the last room to get any real design attention - but here at Lightbox we believe it deserves just as much care and thought as any other space in the house.
Designing bathroom lighting is a balancing act. Of course, it has to be functional - we all want great mirror light and fittings that can withstand the humidity of a hot bath. But function is only half the story - bathrooms can (and should!) also be beautiful.
A considered, layered lighting scheme will make your bathroom feel as styled and personal as the rest of your home - and will take your bath-time to new levels of relaxation!
Here's our guide to getting that balance right, together with a few of our favourite bathroom pieces.
Understanding bathroom lighting zones and IP ratings
Before you fall in love with a fitting, it's worth knowing where you're actually allowed to put it.
Bathrooms are split into zones based on how close they are to water, and each zone has a minimum IP (Ingress Protection) rating attached to it.
- Zone 0 — inside the bath or shower itself. Fittings here must be low voltage (max 12V) and rated at least IP67.
- Zone 1 — the area directly above the bath or shower, up to 2.25m from the floor. A minimum of IP44 is required, though IP65 is best practice.
- Zone 2 — extending 0.6m beyond the bath or shower, up to 2.25m high. This also covers the area around a basin, within 60cm of any tap. IP44 is the minimum here too.
- Outside these zones — no special IP rating is legally required, though we'd still recommend IP20 or above for peace of mind.
The good news is that every product in this guide is IP44 rated or higher, so each one is safe to use in Zone 2 — meaning you're free to focus on the fun part: the styling.
Pairing style with safety
A bathroom doesn't have to choose between looking good and being practical — and it definitely doesn't have to stick to a single aesthetic if you don't want it to. Here's how we'd layer four very different looks using pieces from our range.
Modern Styling: Java and Troy

The Industrial Edge: Annie

What colour temperature should bathroom lighting be?
Once you've chosen your fittings, it's worth thinking about colour temperature too.
Warm light (2700K–3000K) suits general, ambient lighting and is the ideal lighting level for your bathroom scheme. Anything cooler than this risks looking clinical and uninviting.
