How to Light a Dark Hallway

By Sally Edwards, Studio Coordinator

The hallway is the first thing you see when you walk through the front door, and yet it's one of the most neglected spaces in the home when it comes to lighting.

Many hallways — particularly in terraced houses or flats — suffer from a lack of natural light, narrow proportions, or both. But a dark hallway doesn't have to feel like an afterthought. With the right approach to lighting, it can become one of the most characterful and welcoming spaces in your home.

The most common mistake in a dark hallway is relying on a single ceiling light to do all the work. One overhead bulb, however bright, tends to cast flat, uninspiring light that does nothing for depth or atmosphere.

The key is layering — combining a ceiling fitting with wall lights that throw light sideways across the walls, creating warmth and the visual impression of a wider, more generous space. Lighter bulb tones (around 2700K) add to the sense of welcome, while a warm metallic finish on your fittings — brass, aged brass, or bronze — will bounce light softly around your space rather than absorbing it.

The Lightbox Edit - Our Hallway Lighting Collection

For the ceiling, the newly arrived Caldera Mid Century Semi Flush Ceiling Light is a gorgeous choice for a standard hallway. Its brushed aged brass frame holds frosted outer glass shades that envelop opal glass spheres, producing a soft, diffused glow that spreads light evenly without any harsh glare — exactly what a dark space needs. Designed with low ceilings in mind and dimmable for complete control, it's both practical and beautiful.

To layer the light and really transform your space, pair this with the Caldera Mid Century Wall Light from the same collection — mounted either side of a mirror or along the hallway wall, a pair of these sophisticated wall lights will create depth, warmth, and an easy sense of style.

For wider entrance halls or landings where you have the ceiling height for something with a little more presence, the Jocelyn Mid Century Chandelier in Natural Brass and Ribbed Glass — also new in — makes a lovely statement overhead while still casting a warm, ambient light throughout the space.

Designer's Tip — Mirrors and Light

Jack Inston, our in-house Lighting Designer with 13 years’ experience in luxury residential lighting design, shares his professional recommendations for layering light in a hallway.

"Most hallways are working with a single source — a run of downlights in a new build, or a pendant or two. It’s easy to think that’s enough. It isn’t.

The additional layers aren’t about brightness. They’re about breaking your light free from overhead — because light that only comes from above is flat, clinical, and uninviting. What you’re building instead is warmth: multiple low-wattage sources at different heights, each contributing something soft. Get this right and you’ll feel it the moment you walk through the door. So will your guests.

Start by positioning wall lights either side of a mirror, or either side of a piece of artwork with a mirror on the opposite wall to bounce light back through the space. Mount them at 150–170cm from finished floor level to the centre of the fitting, and choose a mirror with a warm-toned or metallic frame that ties back to your fittings.

If the space is already decorated and chasing new wiring isn’t an option, rechargeable wall lights are a genuinely elegant solution. Hallways are transitional spaces — nobody lingers — so lights are rarely on for extended periods, making occasional charging entirely practical.

The final layer most people miss: a slim console table or display cabinet with a table lamp. Aim for three additional sources beyond your overhead fitting. Layer them all at low wattage, and the transformation is immediate.”
