The "Correct" Height for Dining Room Lighting

Interior Design 101:

How low should a light hang above a dining table?

We get asked this question on a daily basis...and...well...its a difficult one. There really is no strict right or wrong answer here BUT there are definitely easy guidelines to follow, rules of thumb that can instantly give you the correct starting point.

See our quick guide below (but bare in mind that these standards are always made to be deviated from! Start with the exact measurement provided below but feel free to inch up or down and inch or two until you're happy!)

Quick Guide

8' Ceiling: 32-36" from the bottom of the fitting to the table top
9' Ceiling: 36"-40" from the bottom of the fitting to the table top

10' Ceiling 40-44" from the bottom of the fitting to the table top

General Rule of thumb:

Your light fitting should hang 30-36" from the top of your table if you have an 8' ceiling. For every foot of ceiling height beyond 8', add 3-6" to the length of chain/wire.

Now you have the ceiling height sorted but are you still struggling to work out what SIZE ceiling light you need for over your table? Check out our mini-blog: 'Over Table Lighting; How to Choose the Right Size'
